What does it mean to be sustainable?
Slapping the word 'sustainable' onto your product or business can often prompt more eye-rolls than plaudits or major SEO wins. Consumers are growing more aware of the potential 'greenwashing' efforts from corporations deploying buzzwords like 'vegan', 'cruelty-free' and 'fairtrade' generally intended to comfort the consumer, you know, help us feel a bit better about our shopping habits. With a little scrutiny, those claims don't always stack up to much. Call us skeptics, but we're always a tad suspicious when retailers boast green credentials whilst simultaneously luring us with trend-driven, (furiously) fast fashion.
And we get it, I love British high-street fashion- edgy, cool and always on point, but don't kid myself I'm saving the world by purchasing ANOTHER pair of M&S boyfriend-jeans. (I needed indigo! And make no mistake, I love M&S!)
BUT that isn't to suggest we don't care about improving our behaviour. We don't want to become perennial cynics and ignore the little things we can all do to be, yes, a bit more sustainable.
For us, sustainability means a more conscious-consumerism, with quality and transparency paramount to production. With this in mind, as a British brand we started spotted-seal with the ambition to make as much as we can in the UK. It means supporting our amazing manufacturers, celebrating talented makers and knowing where our products are being made. We love visiting our factories and seeing where the magic happens. It means spying first-hand the skill involved in making our comfy hoodies and taking delivery without hopping onto a plane. We're not perfect, but we do our best and hope it shows in the finished goods.
